Honingerdijk – Elegant Souterrain Renovation in Historic Kralingen, Rotterdam
The Honingerdijk project is a refined interior renovation of a classic townhouse souterrain in the historic Kralingen district of Rotterdam. Designed for a young family, the transformation reorganizes the underused basement into a functional, comfortable, and aesthetically rich living space — combining family life and remote work in a compact urban footprint.
A 1.5-meter rear extension supports a new garden-level patio with integrated walkable skylights. This addition not only brings abundant daylight into the souterrain but also enhances the spatial continuity between the ground-floor living areas and the garden, improving both atmosphere and usability.
At the street-facing side, a new window introduces daylight into what was once a storage area, converting it into a bright and welcoming bedroom. Adjacent, a glass partition defines a serene home office that remains visually connected yet acoustically private.
The garden side hosts a reimagined primary bedroom with a custom walk-in closet, while the former baby room has been expanded into a cheerful children’s bedroom with ample storage and space to grow. The design features loam plaster walls, warm wood panelling, and a harmonious palette of muted yet vibrant colors — grounded, playful, and full of character.
