Modii – Parametric Interactive Installation by TU Delft Students
Modii is a fully digitally fabricated, modular interactive installation developed by students of Delft University of Technology as part of the Minor Interactive Environments program. The installation explores the intersection of architecture, interaction design, and responsive systems. Its primary goal: to create a dynamic balance in occupancy by guiding visitors to either side of the structure using touch, light, and motion.
At the heart of Modii are four columns made of electroluminescent wire, which serve as sensory interfaces. As visitors engage with the installation, Modii responds in real-time by illuminating and shifting movement to attract attention toward less occupied zones. The structure itself is built from uniquely shaped modules, designed with Grasshopper scripting by Thijs van der Lely and Han Feng, and fabricated through parametric, file-to-factory principles.
Each component is multifunctional — structurally supporting the twisting wire columns, housing electronics, and shaping spatial experience. Emphasizing open-source principles, Modii invites others to adapt and evolve its design. The project exemplifies how responsive, rule-based systems and modular architecture can coalesce into an immersive, interactive environment.
