’t Vogelhuis – Biobased, Circular Home Renovation in Bergen

’t Vogelhuis is a sustainable home renovation and extension in the countryside of Bergen, North Holland. Designed for a couple committed to regenerative farming and ecological living, the project transforms two modest Danish log cabins into a modern, low-impact home that supports a future off-grid lifestyle.

The owners’ primary brief was clear: to build using biobased, circular materials sourced as locally as possible. In response, ADL VDL designed an L-shaped timber extension that connects and expands the existing structures, creating a large open-plan living and dining space at one end, and a garage at the other. The design incorporates generous roof overhangs and full-height glass curtain walls that open up sweeping views of the surrounding land and enhance solar gain.

A distinctive 2.3-meter round window — referencing the clients’ love of birdwatching — gives the house its name: ’t Vogelhuis (“The Birdhouse”). The original cabins are wrapped in reclaimed wood and additional insulation, while the extension is clad in wood shingles. Every material choice supports the vision of a biobased, circular, and locally rooted architecture in tune with nature.
