 Architect in Haarlem

Renovating, extending or building new in Haarlem. We work here on existing houses, with respect for the street and room for light and use inside.

In Haarlem we renovated a house (completed in 2023) and designed the renovation of a house on the Thomsonlaan. These projects show what usually matters in this city: an existing house with character, a narrow plot, and the question of how to create more light and space without harming the street.

Large parts of Haarlem are protected. Haarlem-Noord, including the Kleverpark and the Bomenbuurt, has been a protected townscape since 2016. In Haarlem-Zuidwest this applies to the Koninginnebuurt, the Wilhelminapark and Bosch en Vaart, among others. Building plans are assessed by the Adviescommissie Omgevingskwaliteit. We take these frameworks into account from the first sketch design.

 Good to know

Protected townscape

Haarlem-Noord (2016) and parts of Haarlem-Zuidwest are nationally protected. Changes to the front need extra care.

Rear

An extension at the back is often the best place for extra space and light. Whether it can be built without a permit depends on the omgevingsplan.

Advisory committee

The Adviescommissie Omgevingskwaliteit Haarlem assesses the appearance of building plans.

 Frequently asked questions

Do I live in a protected townscape?

You can see this on the omgevingsplan map in the Omgevingsloket. We check it at the start of every project.

Can I extend my 1930s house?

Often yes, usually at the rear or with a roof extension. What is possible depends on the site, the omgevingsplan and the committee's advice.
